Book an AppointmentWhat is ankle pain and achilles tendinitis?
Ankle pain can develop from an acute sprain, or build gradually through overuse and repetitive loading. Achilles tendinitis, inflammation or degeneration of the Achilles tendon, is one of the most common running injuries and can become a long-term problem without the right treatment.
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone and bears enormous forces with every step. When it becomes overloaded or irritated, pain and stiffness around the back of the heel can significantly limit activity.
Common symptoms
- Pain or stiffness in the Achilles tendon, especially in the morning
- Tenderness when pressing on the Achilles tendon
- Swelling around the ankle or heel
- Pain after exercise that worsens the next day
- Ankle instability or repeated sprains
- Reduced ability to push up on to tiptoe
- Creaking or thickening of the Achilles tendon
- Pain that worsens with running or climbing stairs
How we can help
Treatment combines soft tissue work to the calf and Achilles tendon, joint mobilisation of the ankle and foot, and a carefully structured rehabilitation programme. Load management is central to Achilles tendon recovery. We will advise you on how to stay as active as possible while allowing the tendon to heal. We also address contributing factors in the foot, knee and hip.
