How we can help babies and children

If your baby seems unsettled, uncomfortable or unhappy and you're not sure why, you're not alone. It's one of the most common things we hear from parents. Here are some of the ways gentle osteopathy can help.

For Babies

Unsettled or Unhappy Baby

Sometimes babies carry physical tension from birth that makes them uncomfortable and hard to settle. Gentle osteopathy can help release that tension, support the nervous system and encourage more restful sleep.

Colic & Digestive Discomfort

Excessive crying, wind, straining and general tummy discomfort are very common in young babies. Soft, rhythmic techniques can help relax the diaphragm, ease trapped wind and support more comfortable digestion.

Reflux & Silent Reflux

Tension in the chest and diaphragm, particularly common after a c-section or fast delivery, can contribute to reflux. Gentle osteopathy can help release this tension and support more comfortable feeding.

Feeding Difficulties

A preference for one side, difficulty latching, or restlessness during feeds can sometimes be linked to tension in the neck, jaw or shoulders. We assess how your baby moves and feeds to help identify and address any physical factors.

Neck Preference & Torticollis

A stiff or tilted neck, often present from birth or developing in the early weeks, can affect feeding, sleep and comfort. Gentle treatment can help release tight muscles and restore freer movement.

Difficult Birth

Babies born by c-section, ventouse or forceps may hold tension around the head, neck and back from the delivery process. Gentle osteopathic treatment can help ease this discomfort and support healthy early development.

Sleep & Settling Difficulties

When a baby is physically uncomfortable it affects everything, including sleep. Our calm, restorative approach helps babies relax more deeply, which often supports better settling and longer stretches of sleep.

For Children

Growing Pains

Leg pain in children, particularly at night, can be distressing for the whole family. Osteopathy can assess the musculoskeletal factors involved and provide treatment and advice to help manage symptoms.

Sports Injuries

Young athletes place significant demands on growing bodies. We provide age-appropriate assessment and rehabilitation to support safe recovery and a confident return to sport.

Postural Concerns

Concerns about posture, gait or movement patterns in children. Early assessment can identify issues and address them before they become more established or painful.

Headaches

Recurrent headaches in children can have a musculoskeletal component. We always recommend that new or persistent headaches in children are assessed by a GP first to rule out any underlying cause before beginning osteopathic treatment.

What to expect

Paediatric appointments are calm, unhurried and always led by what your child needs. Parents are present and involved throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Is osteopathy safe for babies and young children?
Yes. Paediatric osteopathy uses extremely gentle techniques adapted for small bodies. There is no manipulation or forceful movement. Treatment is soft, subtle and always done at the child's pace. Our osteopaths are experienced in treating babies from just a few weeks old.
How soon after birth can a baby have osteopathy?
Babies can be seen from just a few weeks old. Many parents bring their newborns in the first few weeks, particularly if the birth was long, difficult or involved assisted delivery. Early treatment can be very effective for colic, feeding difficulties and unsettledness.
Will my baby or child cry during treatment?
Some babies do cry during or after treatment. This can be a normal response and usually settles quickly. We work gently and follow the baby's cues, pausing when needed. Parents are always with their child and can stop or take a break at any time.
My child has been referred by their GP. Do I need to bring anything?
You don't need a referral letter, though if your GP or health visitor has written anything, please bring it along as it can be helpful. Do bring your red book for babies, any relevant medical history and a list of any medications or supplements your child takes.
I'm looking for a paediatric osteopath near me in Farnham or Fleet. Are you easy to get to?
Yes. Oak Park Clinic is based in Crondall, between Farnham and Fleet, with easy access from Hook, Aldershot, Farnborough and surrounding villages. We have free on-site parking and flexible appointment times to suit families.
